What is the meaning behind asking, “I wonder what the poor people are doing?”

Most monetarily affluent and regrettably insecure individuals mentally thrive by engaging in downward social comparison. They use this technique to cope with their own pitfalls. They have a dire need to compare themselves to others they think they are financially and socially superior to or have power over. They practice the downward social comparison phenomenon because they are attention seeking, egotistical, need to fit in, to be liked, to boost their self-esteem and self-worth, to be part of a group or clique, and to feel good about themselves, namely because they really don’t have all of their ducks in a row and are psychologically unfortunate. Nonetheless, they are only monetarily rich, so they flaunt it.
